Coconut Fiber as a Green Hydroponics Grow Medium
When coconuts are harvested most of this delicious fruit is wasted. The coconut you see sitting on the shelf of your grocery store already stripped of it’s husk is only about half of the fruit that comes off the tree. The rest is mostly wasted.
But now you can make good use of this husk in your homemade hydroponics garden because coconut fiber is an excellent grow medium for your plants.
When looking for a hydroponics grow medium two factors are of paramount importance: how much water (nutrient solution) does the medium retain and how much air does the medium retain.
Perlite for instance retains plenty of air but drains a little too well and so does not retain much water.
Vermiculite on the other hand will hold lots of water but not much air.
Coconut fibre holds both water and air very well indeed. And it is a natural substance that green hydroponics gardeners can feel good about using.
On the shop shelf coconut fiber hydroponics grow medium doesn’t look like much. It has been compressed into a rather dull looking brick. But don’t be fooled. Coconut fiber will expand to about eight times its dried and compressed size when water is added.
If you are looking an excellent grow medium for your homemade hydroponics garden you can’t go far wrong with coconut fibre.
