If you want to build your own hydroponics system it does not have be either difficult or expensive. Sure there are plenty of elaborate kits and complex hydroponics systems available but if you are interested in staying low tech and simple it’s cheap and easy to build a hydroponics system.
If you have a small area in your basement or garage that you can devote to a homemade hydroponics system you can easily grow fresh, wholesome, high quality vegetables all year round.
Here’s a simple, basic system that you can use to get started with your own homemade hydroponics vegetable garden.
Start off with a couple of the cheap coolers that are used for summer picnics. They are made of white Styrofoam and cost very little. These containers are going to be the basic equipment for your hydroponics vegetable garden. Be sure to keep the lids. You’ll need them. The bottom part of these coolers will hold your nutrient solution and the tops will hold the plants.
When coconuts are harvested most of this delicious fruit is wasted. The coconut you see sitting on the shelf of your grocery store already stripped of it’s husk is only about half of the fruit that comes off the tree. The rest is mostly wasted.
But now you can make good use of this husk in your homemade hydroponics garden because coconut fiber is an excellent grow medium for your plants.
If you decide to build your own homemade hydroponics system you will find that you can grow far more plants in the space you have available to you.
In a traditional garden your plants have to develop a large root mass in order to find all the nutrients they need in the soil. When planting you have to be sure that each plant has sufficient room to grow the roots it needs without interfering with its neighbor.
Raft hydroponic gardening systems are “water culture” hydroponic systems. Unlike flood-and-drain and wick systems, no grow media (e.g. rockwool, coconut coir) is used. Instead, plants grow directly in water, enriched with nutrients.
